SOFTWARE QU.'..'.. wSURANCE MEETING On June 11, IM1, members of the Performance and Quality Evaluation Branch (LPEB) met at One White flint North with representatives of the Nuclear Utili.
ties Sof t are Managers Group (NUSFG) and of Nuclear Management and Resources Council (hWARC) to discuss sof tware quality assurance ($QA).
A list of attendees is provided in Enclosure 1.
LPEB has been working on collecting information on controls applied to sof tware in operating plants to determine the need for or nature of regulatory or inspection guidance.
NUSFG is comprise of representatives of thirty-nine nuclear utilities.
Its purpose is to acquire and exchange information on software management issues, including quality assurance. NUSMG, aware of the staf f's desire to determine the status of SQA practices in the industry, wanted to explore the possibility of f acilitating this effort.
During the meeting, the participants discussed the type of information desired, and how it might be most ef ficiently collected.
At the meeting, NUSMG raised the idea of performing a survey of its member utilities and sharing the results of this survey with NRC.
The staff was supportive of this approach, but also noted the desirability of some site visits to examine implenentation of the SQA programs.
At the conclusion of the meeting, NUSMG and NUFMRC noted that they would meet separately to discuss what, if anything, they could do in this area. nut %RC indicated that they would inform us of their decision whether or nct to support the SQA survey.
