Dear Dr. Hedge: I

~

LThis refers to the inspection conducted on Augtist 17-20, 1999, at your Washington j

State University TRIGA Reactor at the Nuclear Radiation Center.- The enclosed report

presents the 'results of that inspection.

Various aspects of your reactor operation and safeguards programs were inspected,

' including ~ selective examinations of procedures and. representative records, interviews with

,

personnel, and observations of the facility.-

During the last inspection in September 1998, (Report No. 50-027/98-201) a few systems

I-

requiring maintenance, repair, or replacement were noted. Throughout the last year your

, . Reactor and Facilities Development staffs have kept the NRC staff updated on replacement

of the reactor cooling tower and heat exchanger, and the repair and relining of the reactor

pool concrete tank. As detailed in the body of this report, these activities were being

'E

performed in a timely and controlled manner with a focus on safety and keeping radiation

-

exposures as low as reasonably achievable (ALARA).
