PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION'0F EVENT OR UNUSUAL OCCURRENCE--PNO-78-210 This areliminary notification constitutes EARLY notice of event of POSSI3LE safety or public interest significance.
The information presented is as initially received without verification or evaluation and is basically all that is known by IE staff on this date.
SUBJECT:
DETONATION OF NUCLEAR WEAPON The Department of Energy and the Environmental Protection Agency notified -
IE Headquarters that the Peoples Republic of China detonated a nuclear weapon in the atmosphere at Lop Nor in Northwest China.
The detonation was low yield (< 20 kt) and occurred at approximately 1 a.m. EST, December 14.
It is expected that NOAA will provide periodic predictions of the fallout trajectory.
