Supplement to Request for Exemption from 10 CFR 50, Appendix R, Section Ill.G,

" Fire Protection of Safe Shutdown Capability" In letter dated August 14,1997, Prairie Island requested an exemption from the l

provisions of 10 CFR Part 50, Appendix R, Section Ill.G," Fire protection of safe l

shutdown capability." Information provided in the August 14,1997 exemption request with respect to the fire severity for Fire Areas 1,31,32, and 71 was not accurate. The discussions of combustible loading and fire severity for all four areas note that combustible loading corresponds to a fire severity of less than 15 minutes on the ASTM E-119 standard time temperature curve. In all four cases the noted fire severity should have been less than 30 minutes.

l The inaccuracies in the submitted fire severity information were due to inaccurate information in a previous revision of the Safe Shutdown Analysis. The inaccurate information was identified during self assessment activities.

By this letter Prairie Island supplements the information in the August 14,1997 exemption request as follows:

Item 3 in the discussion of Fire Areas 31 and 32 (page 7)- amend to read:

The combustibles are lubricating oil and cable insulation. The combustibles comprise a very light fuelload which, if totally consumed, would correspond to a fire severity ofless than 30 minutes on the ASTM E-119 standard time temperature curve.

1 Discussion of Fire Areas 1 and 71 (second sentence of last paragraph on page 7)

- amend to read:

This area contains very light combustible loading consisting oflubricating oil and cable insulation corresponding to a fire severity ofless than 30 minutes on the ASTM E-119 standard time temperature curve.

We apologize for any inconvenience that may have resulted from the inaccurate information provided in the August 14,1997 request for exemption.

In this letter we have made no new Nuclear Regulatory Commission commitments.
