RADI0 ACTIVE MATERIAL IN PRIVATE SECTOR Region I inspectors accompanied by representatives of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and the local government, while conducting a radiation survey of a public park (an alleged former dump site) in Attleboro, Massachusetts, on November 28-29, 1978, identified several localized contaminated areas.
The maximum observed radiation readings were 0.3 mr/hr gross beta-gamma at the surface.
Soil samples taken at these locations were analyzed at Region I.
Preliminary results indicated that the radioactive material was Radium-22i.
On December 8. Region I was notified by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts that geW l several high school students had removed several bags of soil from the contaminated area to be used as a science exhibit in the local high school.
k School officials turned the bags of possibly contaminated soil over to the Attleboro Civil Defense Director who notified the Common-

Region I was informed that the Massachusetts Department of Public Health was about to request that the contaminated areas of the public park (Finberg Field) be posted with "No Trespassing by Order of l

Media interest is expected because a reporter was with the survey team when the contamination was found and the survey received extensive local media coverage.
