November 22, 1978 PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION OF EVENT OR UNUSUAL OCCURRENCE--PNO-78-190B This preliminary notification constitutes EARLY notice of event of POSSIBLE safety or public interest significance.
The information presented is as initially received without verification or evaluation and is basically all that is known by IE staff on this date.

Privately Owned Landfill Norton, Massachusetts
Subject:
RADI0 ACTIVE MATERIAL IN PRIVATE DUMP Analysis by DOE's Radiological and Environmental Services Laboratory indicates that the radioactivity in soil samples obtained during the comprehensive surface radiation survey conducted on October 31 -
November 2,1978, is enriched, natural and depleted processed uranium compounds. Work is continuing on these samples to identify the compounds involved.
Region I inspectors will conduct radiation surveys on November 28 -
December 1,1978 of an additional 12-15 industrial dump sites to determine e:
if radioactive material may be present.
Concurrently, an investigation,
~l into possible sources of the radioactive material found in the private ~ly

owned landfill, is being conducted.
Meetings will be held on November 27, 1978 and November 28, 1978 with Commonwealth of Massachusetts, Norton and Attleboro officials to inform them of the planned radiation surveys.
The Commonwealth of Massachusetts and local governments have been kept informed.
