Subject:
DISCOVERY OF TC-99M GENERATOR BY CHICAGO RESIDENT A resident of Chicago, Illinois, recovered a cardboard package which fell off a truck near his home.
The individual took the package home, opened it, discovered that it contained radioactive materials (a 1.5 Ci Mo-99-Tc-99m generator, dated 9/8/78, Mallinckrodt Nuclear), and then called the Chicago Police at approximately 7:00 p.m., 10/5/78. The police, in turn, called DOE:CH.
Based on information provided by the police that the package and its contents did not appear damaged and that the radioactive material had decayed for about 10 half-lives DOE I
initially decided to delay followup actions until the following day.
de I However, media interest began to increase and DOE decided to respond.
Because of the fact that licensed material was involved, RIII also
.y responded to the scene.
r A radiation survey of the package and of the individual who found it was perforned at approximately 12:15 a.m.,10/6/78.
No contami-nation was detected.
No press release is being made by RIII; however, there has been media interest and PIII is responding to inquiries.
The State of Illinois has been informed.
Region III became aware of this (.ccurrence by a telephone inquiry from the news media at 7:45'p.m., 10/5/78.
