The information presented is as initially received without verification or evaluation and is basically all that is known by IE staff on this date.

SUBJECT:

POSSIBLE OVEREXPOSURE OF A RADIOGRAPHER'S ASSISTANT ON OFF-SHORE WELL PLATFORM A possible overexposure of radiographer's assistant working on a well platform, approximately 60 miles off-shore in the Gulf of Mexico, was reported on August 24, 1978.

The possible overexposure occurred on m

August 22, 1978, during a source disconnect problem of a 92-curie, iridium-192 radiography source.

The extent of the exposure is unknown at this time.

Film badges are

N currently being processed. The State of Louisiana is gathering preliminary information. The Region IV office of Inspection and Enforcement will conduct an investigation.

There has been no press coverage.

The Headquarters Office of Inspection and Enforcement (Washington, D.C.)

received notification of the event from State Agreements Programs, OSP, by telephone on August 24, 1978.
