PRELIf41 NARY NOTIFICATION OF EVENT OR UNUSUAL OCCURRENCE--PNO-78-154 This preliminary notification constitutes EARLY notice of an event of POSSIBLE safety or public interest significance.

The information presented is as initially received without verification or evaluation and is basically all that is known by IE staff on this date.

ACCIDENT INVOLVING RADI0 ACTIVE MATERIAL At 7:58 a.m. (EDT), August 27, 1978, a pickup truck transporting a 45-Curie iridium 192 industrial radiography source was involved in an accident on an interstate highway near Saginaw, !11chigan.

The driver was injured and the truck was damaged by fire.

No damage to the radioactive source occurred. No release of material or radi-ation exposures resulted.

The iridium source was contained in its shielded container and the g3 container was packaged inside a plywood box.

The box was removed from the truck and placed at the side of the highway until the owner

retrieved it at about 1:00 p.m. (EDT).

The State Police, Civil Defense representatives, and a survey team i

from the Michigan Department of Public Health responded to the accident.

Traffic was detoured via an interstate spur road for about 4.5 hours5.787037e-5 days <br />0.00139 hours <br />8.267196e-6 weeks <br />1.9025e-6 months <br />.

The Department of Energy Radiological Assistance Team was notified but there was no need for them to respond.

Three television stations covered the accident.

The State of Michigan was informed. A press release is not planned by the licensee nor NRC at this time.

Press inquiries will be answered orally.

NRC Region III (Chicago) received notification of this occurrence by telephone from Director, Michigan Department of Health at 7:25 a.m.
