GENERAL ATOMICS SITE DECOMMISSIONING STATUS MEETING On March 20,1998, representatives of General Atomics met with the Fuel Cycle Licensing Branch (FCLB) staff at the Nuclear Regulatory Commis@n (NRC) headquarters in Rockville, Maryland. The following individuals attended the meeting:

The purpose of the meeting was to discuss the current site status and decommissioning schedule and plans at the General Atomics facility near La Jolla, Califomia.

Site Status Dr. Keith Asmussen discussed the site status for each of the separate facilities at the GA site and provided updated information regarding Table 2-1 regarding planned decommissioning

, activities. GA advised they would submit a revision updating the proposed decommissioning plan, y

GA indicated that they were accelerating their decommissioning schedule at the request of the GA owners. Further, they stated that the SVB building was on a " fast track" for decommiss-ioning and that approval of the site decommissioning plan would assure that crucial persont el could continue their decommissioning efforts without their employment being interrupted. The associated discussion on this issue established that the SVB facility had been, for the most part, decontaminated and final decommissioning was to begin soon. If this was true, then decommissioning could L 'aceed without obtaining additional approval from NRC, in accordance with 10 CFR 70.3W' In fact, GA described significantly more extensive remediation and decommissioning activiues that were conducted onsite during the 1980s (e.g., exhumation of large volumes of contaminated soil). GA advised they would examine the remaining decommissioning effort and determine if this was true, in the interim, NRC committed to continue its review of the site decommissioning plan.
