NRC INSPECTION REPORT 50-271/98-01
Dear Mr. Reid:
On March 14,1998, the NRC completed an inspection at your Vermont Yankee reactor
i
facility. The enclosed report presents the results of that inspection.
During the seven week period covered by this inspection period, your conduct of activities
at the Vermont Yankee facility was generally characterized by safety-conscious operations,
sound engineering and maintenance practices, and careful radiological work controls. Also,
the management of solid radioactive waste and of transportation of radioactive materials
was found to be conducted effectively.
During this inspection period, two design issues were identified by your staff involving the
reactor building closed cooling water (RBCCW) system containment isolation function, and

the high pressure coolant injection (HPCl) and reactor core isolation cooling (RCIC)
systems' steam exhaust line vacuum breakers. We will continue to follow your technical
resolution of these issues during future inspections of your site.

In accordance with 10 CFR 2.790 of the NRC's " Rules of Practices," a copy of this letter
and the enclosures will be placed in the NRC Public Document Room.
