ALL AGREEMENT STATES MINNESOTA, OKLAHOMA, PENNSYLVANIA, WISCONSIN OTHER INFORMATION: AVAILABILITY OF THE JOINT NRC/ EPA SEWAGE SLUDGE RADIOLOGICAL SURVEY: SURVEY DESIGN AND TEST SITE RESULTS REPORT (SP 066)
As identified in All Agreement States letter SP-98-086, dated November 4,1998, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) are sponsoring a study of radionuclide levels in sewage sludge and ash from sewage treatment plants (publicly-owned treatment works, or POTWs). The study is coordinated by a Federal interagency working group (the Interagency Steering Committee on Radiation Standards, (ISCORS)).
The first phase of the study, which involved testing the questionnaire methods, sampling, and analytical procedures at nine POTW sites, is described in the report " Joint NRC/ EPA Sewage Sludge Radiological Survey: Survey Design and Test Site Results" and is available on the Web at http://www.nre aov/NMSS/DWM/DECOM/seweroilotrecort htm.
The survey has been refined based on the test case experiences and public comments received on the survey. The results of the full survey, which involves sampling at up to 300 POTWs, will be published as a joint NRC/ EPA report for use by POTW operators, Federal agencies, States, and local officials.
If you have questions regarding the report please contact Duane W. Schmidt, CHP, Division of Waste Management, Office of Nuclear Material Safety and Safeguards at (301) 415-6919 or by e-mail at DWS2@NRC. GOV.
