Status of the Reactor Building Sump In-Line Beta Monitoring System

Dear Mr. Calvo:

This is the third quarterly report on the status of the Reactor Building Sump Beta Monitoring System .in accordance with Public Service Company of Colorado's agreement with you. This period covers the first half of the six (6) months extension in testing, as i discussed in Reference 3.

In Reference 2, we conveyed our intent to address our problem with the quality of the effluent from the Reactor Building Sump filter .

banks. The primary concerns were particulate material greater than one (1) micron and oil contamination. These problems caused reduced sensitivity of the scintillation cells over the course of a release  !

and increased wear of the pump gears. The Reactor Building Sump In- {

Line Beta Monitoring System is essentially unchanged, mechanically, '

since the last. report. Due to the time constraints and volume of work involved in completion of the Environmental Qualification Outage, work on the Reactor Building Sump Monitoring System has been j significantly delayed. This delay is primarily due to the time  ;

necessary for processing paperwork for the Change Notice (CN-2313C) l and for obtaining parts.

The followingis the' current addition to the Beta Monitoring System chronology, previously provided in-Reference'3:

02/20/87 The Reactor Building Sump Monitor was.taken off'line. 'I t Nuclear Engineering Department and Results Department-

.were consulted concerning possible solutions to the..

problem of entrained particulates.

'04/01/87 The decision was made to tap the sample line for the Reactor Building Sump Monitor directly into 'the . exit flange of :the Reactor Building.. Sump filters. This Lallows.for the'use of entirely non-carbon. steel piping.

05/07/87. Materials- for the modification were ordered and CN '

i 2313C was issued for design interface. review- and licensing. review.

06/17/87 CN-2313C~was approved for. work review and scheduling. l It is anticipated that final approval of CN-2313C will be received during July of 1987. _ Construction and continued testing will' resume shortly thereafter.

Efforts are continuing on the issue of oil contamination of the.

Reactor Building Sump but evaluation'of the-success of this effort

'will not be~ apparent until' testing of the Reactor Building Sump Monitor resumes'.
