Recommendation 97-1 Implementation Plan Small Sites Holdings suaxcT:
Reference (a): Phonecon Bill Heid, DOE /EM Brian Horn, NRC 12:
Brian Horn, Nuclear Regulatory Commission.
1 As discussed in reference (a), the Nuclear Materials Management and Safeguards System (NMMSS) database lists five (5) sites for which the Nuclear R' gulatory Commission (NRC) is e
responsible as having small inventories of U-233. The enclosed table lists the sites.
The DOE Recommendation 97-1 Implementation Plan (IP) designates Oak Ridge as the DOE's permanent, long-term U-233 repository. An objective of the plan is have all U-233 that does not have a 'defmed current or future use where it is currently located be assessed, prepared for shipment, and shipped to Dak Ridge for processing and storage.
Preparations for shipping the U-233 held at the NRC sites to Oak Ridge requires an assessment of each site's inventory. The Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) has been assigned a 97-1 IP milestone to compile the individual site assessments into an integrated report that will be a key element in planning the execution of following Implementation Plan requirements. To complete its report LLNL requires some basic information about the inventory at each site.
Please provide the following for each NRC site directly to LLNL with copy to DOE /EM-66 as soon as possible and no later than May 1,1998:
- Quantity of U-233 held by item and weight.
- Physical state (metal, oxide, solution, ete 1.
- Physical condition.
- Current and/or planned future use, if applicable.
- Special handling requirements.
- How is it packaged?
Brent Ives at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (510/423-2636) has been assigned to be the DOE U-233 97-1 Small Sites Coordinator. Brent and Hoyt Johnson at EM-66 are direct points of contact if you require further clarification of this n 6
