SUBJECT:

SURVEY ON DAM SAFETY-RELATED RESEARCH

Dear Mr. Liu:

In response to your request dated January 9,1998, we hereby respond to the Current Dam-Safety Related Research questionnaire. The questionnaire was distributed to members of the Interagency Committee on Dam Safety (ICODS).

As you may be aware, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission is responsible for only 19 dams. The dams under NRC's jurisdiction include Category I structures which impound water needed to assure the safe operation of nuclear power plants, and mill tailings embankments related to uranium milling activities. All 19 dams are considered to be in the " Low-Hazard" category.

Given the small number of dams in NRC's program, and the low-hazard nature of the structures, our dam safety research needs are insignificant, as reflected in the completed questionnaire. If you have any questions regarding the enclosure, please call Daniel Rom of my staff at (301) 415-6704.

Sincerely,
