Representatives of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission's (NRC's) Office of Nuclear Reactor

Regulation and NNECO met to discuss the resolution of Thermo-Lag and Appendix R fire

- protection issues.

The meeting was held at NRC Headquarters in Rockville, Maryland.- A list of attendees is -

provided as Enclosure 1 and the reference material used by NNECO is provided as Enclosure 2.

SUMMARY

NNECO discussed the potential need for exemptions from 10 CFR Part 50, Appendix R in four-specific areas, which included the charging pump room, the intake structure, the east 480 voit switchgear room and the need for lighting in specific outdoor areas. Based on NNECO's presentation, as detailed in the enclosure, the NRC staff indicatr / that exemptions were needed in all the areas discussed except for the intake structure. 16 based on additional review the staffinformed NNECO that an exemption would also be 6 + hr the intake of structure.

NNECO discussed the status of the Thermo Lag work that1: W m final design stages or is being implemented. NNECO noted that all of the Thermo-Lag ws would be completed prior to Mode 4. NNECO further indicated that its response to the NRC staffs request for additional

- information (RAI) regarding Thermo-Lag related ampacity derating of electrical cabling would be provided within the next week or 2. A different calculational method was used, which provides more realistic and accurate results. The details of the calculational methodology and the results will be provided in NNECO's response to the RAI.

The' NRC staff indicated that the required exemptions and the response to the RAI needs to be submitted on an expedited basis to allow the NRC staff the time necessary to complete its
