Dear Mr. Ward:

During the review of ENC's extended burnup topical report XN-NF-82-06, Revision 1, several ENC letters and supplements were.provided which contained additional information requested by the staff. These were referenced in the staff's safety evaluation report (C. E. Rossi letter to G. N. Ward, July 18,1986). Not all of this information was used in our SER.

Per your request to Mr. R. Lobel of my staff, we are providing additional information regarding which sections of each supplement to XN-NF-82-06, Revision I are acceptable.

Due to different criteria and analy$1s methods for evaluating end-of-life (E0L) rod internal pressures presented by ENC in several references, only two references were found to be acceptable for this damage mechanism. The criteria and analytical methods presented in References 4 and 10 of the SER (i.e., Supplements 4 and 5 to XN-NF-82-06, Rev. 1) were found to be acceptable for evaluating rod internal pressures for PWR and BWR fuel designs, respectively. The remaining references in the SER (References 2-8) that discussed rod internal pressures were not found to be acceptable for this damage mechanism; however, many of these references did contain acceptable criteria and analytical approaches for other fuel damage mechanisms, i.e., for cladding corrosion, rod bowing, fretting wear, etc. Consequently, these references were used in the SER discussion of these damage mechanisms.

In order to clarify which references are acceptable for which damage mechanism, a t'able is attached that lists the damage mechanisms and their acceptable references.
