Dear Dr. Grace:

VIRGINIA ELECTRIC AND POWER COMPANY SURRY AND NORTH ANNA POWER STATT0E EARLY WARNING SYSTEM TESTING The maintenance programs for the Early Warning Systems (EWS) at North Anna and Surry Power Stations have been consolidated under our System Maintenance Support group.

This was done in an effort to standardize maintenance for the Early Warning Systems. The next step in our effort to standardize EWS maintenance is to standardize the testing of the systems at both stations.

Currently, a full activation test of the North Anna EWS is conducted monthly, and PM checks (growl test) are conducted quarterly.

Full activation testing cf the Surry EWS is conducted quarterly and PM checks (growl test) conducted monthly.

These differing test schedulcs were originally developed to accommodate the desires of ' specific local jurisdictions while at the same time complying with the siren testing guidance outlined in NUREG-0654.

After consultation with State and local government officials, we are changing the North Anna EWS full activation testing from monthly to quarterly with associated monthly PM checks to be consistent with the Surry EWS testing schedule.

Specifically, the quarterly full activation testing for the North Anna EWS would be conducted on the third Wednesday of March, June, September, and December, while the Surry EWS testing will continue to be conducted on the second Wednesday of March, June, September, and December.
