SUBJECT:

SUMMARY

OF JUNE 18, 1987, MEETING WITH DUKE POWER COMPANY AND BABC0CK & WILC0X ON B&W'S PLAN FOR LICENSING FUEL FOR CATAWBA AND McGUIRE NUCLEAR STATIONS, UNITS 1 AND 2 General On June 18, 1987, the NRC staff met with Duke Power Company'(DPC) and-Babcock and Wilcox (B&W) representatives to discuss a schedule for review and approval of topical reports related to the use of B&W fuel for Catawba and McGuire reloads. A list' of attendees and the meeting agenda are included as Enclosures 1 and 2, respectively.

Discussion After brief introductory remarks, the NRC staff noted that a similar meeting was held on January 22, 1986, among the NRC, DPC and B&W regarding the same subject. Then the staff provided a status of its review of B&W topical reports.

DPC's representatives discussed the projected schedule for loading B&W fuel in the Catawba and McGuire reactors (See Enclosure 3).. This schedule shows-that Catawba Unit I will receive B&W fuel prior to a July 1991 startup.

B&W's representatives discussed their schedules for manufacturing the prototype, demonstration, and production assemblies, and for topical report submittals (See Enclosure 4). Four demonstration assemblies were recently delivered to DPC for installatio" in the McGuire Unit i reactor during its forthcoming refueling outage sctceduled for September 1987. They also added that several reports will be sube.itted in the latter part of July 1987, and requested approval of all topical reports by June 30, 1989.

Finally, DPC's representative provided a perspective of their future plans -

regarding fuel management and topical report submittals (See Enclosure 5).

-2 Conclusion In order to meet B&W's proposed schedule regarding the review and approval of their topical reports, the NRC staff indicated that this review effort may possibly be perfonned under contract to outside consultants.

Furthermore, the staff agreed to meet with DPC and B&W representatives about August 1987, following B&W submittal of several topical reports.
