'Mr. Thomas E. Murley, Director Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, DC 20555

Subject:

Braidwood Station Unit 1 Fire Protection Program Fire Penetration Seals and Structural Steel Fireproofing work NRC Docket No. 50-456 Reference (a): June 10, 1987 S.C. Hunsader-letter to T. E. Murley.

Dear Mr. Murley:

i Reference (a) provided a description of the penetration seals in. fire-walls that would not be sealed at the time Braidwood Unit I reaches the 5%

power level. The purpose of this letter is to provide a description of the status of fire seal installation to clarify the information provided in reference (a).

At this time 142 (of the 5430 required) penetration seals require work to be completed.

Attachment A provides a break-down of the status of this work. Prior to achieving 5% power, less than 100 of these penetrations will require work tp be completed.

It is expected that by August 31, 1987, the-installation of the fire seals for these penetrations'will be completed. As stated in reference (a),, roving fire watches have already been. instituted as a compensatory measure for the areas affected by the penetration seals to provide the necessary fire protection measures and will remain'in effect until the work is ccanpleted, per Station Administrative Procedures.

Please address any questions concerning this matter to this office.

Very truly yours, A:,h S. C. Hunsader Nuclear Licensing Administrator im Y
