Gentlemen:
kq s\\
N co UNC Recovery Systems is in receipt of fr. Crow's letter of March 4, 1987, requesting the analytical data for all wells for 1986.
The data for all wells cannot be sent for the several reasons described below.
In the normal course of events, all of the wells are sampled on a monthly basis and an aliquot from all samples is screen-ed at the plant for radioactivity (gross alpha and beta) and analysis for nitrates and fluorides is performed for record.
Those samples which fail the gross alpha (15 pCi/L) and gross beta (50 pCi/L) requirements of the license get sent to our vendor laboratory for a more complete radiological analysis.
This laboratory data report is the only analytical data that is retained, other than the nitrate and fluoride data.
All the samples that are acceptable to the license requirements are discarded.
For example; if only one well sample fails the radiological limits of the license, it will be the only sample sent for further analysis and that lab report will be the only data available for that particular sampling period along with the nitrate and fluoride data for all the j
wells sampled.
The license allows, in Condition ll.a and ll.b, for the in-ability to provide well sampling data for a given period due to situations beyond the control of UNC such as 1) the phy-sical inability to take samples due to ground and weather conditions, 2) samples destroyed in shipment to our vendor, or 3)- inability to screen or analyze samples due to equip-ment malfunctions.
However, an explanation of the diffi-culty must be{placed in the well data log book.

Below is an explanation of the missing well data for 1986.
1).
Only data for wells failing our radiological screen-ing analysis will be available, as previously descri-bed.
2).
No samples were taken in October, 1986 due to muddy and rainy conditions preventing well access by vehicle.
3).
Well samples were taken in November, 1986.
Nitrate analyses were performed and the data is attached to this letter.
Fluoride analyses were not performed due to the breakdown of our specific ion electrode.
Radiological screening was not performed due_to the breakdown of our alpha / beta counter that required factory repair.
However, eight samples were sent to our vendor lab.
These samples were selected on the basis of their past radiological history.
The data is attached to this letter.
4).
No samples were taken in December, 1986 due to weather conditions making it impossible to access the wells by vehicle.
The package of data that was sent with the original request contained all available data up to August of 1986 and the attached data completes all data available for 1986.
If there are any questions regarding this matter, please con-tact the writer at your earliest convenience.
Sincerely, UNC RECOVERY SYSTEMS 1
