CHRISTOPHER M. McMURRAY May 5, 1987 con nSeose Morton B. Margulies, Chairman Dr. Jerry R.

Kline Mr. Frederick J. Shon Atomic Safety and Licensing Board U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission East-West Towers 4350 East-West Highway Bethesda, Maryland 20814 Gentlemen:

It has come to Suffolk County's attention that on April 9, 1987, Mr. Maurice Barbash, Chairman of the Citizens To Replace LILCO, requested that this Board schedule limited appearance statements concerning the issues raised in the upcoming hearing on LILCO's reception centers.

The purpose of this letter is to inform the Board that the County supports Mr. Barbash's request.

In particular, he notes that the reception centers are located in residential areas, that there is intense public controversy regarding the three sites, and that the proposed reception centers are on properties which have been zoned for different uses than LILCO proposes under its Plan.

Therefore, the County concurs with Mr. Barbash's conclu-sion that the Board would benefit from hearing the views of the affected members of the public.

The County further suggests that this Board schedule some of i

the limited appearance statements to be heard in Nassau County, where the sites are located, so that those Nassau County resi-dents residents affected by LILCO's reception centers will have the best possible opportunity to be heard.

Yours truly, Christopher M. McMurray i
