ENCLOSURE TMI-I STATUS REPORT FOR THE PERIOD OCTOBER 10 - 17, 1986 i
1.
Plant Status As of 8:00 a.m. on October 17, 1986, TMI-1 was operating at 100 percent power and at normal reactor coolant temperature (579 F) and pressure (2155 4
psig).
2.
Facility Operations Summary The plant continued to operate at 100 percent during the reporting period.
Plant activities associated with upcoming refueling outage continued. The licensee is presently meeting on a weekly basis to discuss outage prepara-tions and coordination.
In order for the plant to remain at or near full power operation, next week the licensee will commence "a plant coastdown," which will last until November 1, 1986.
Plant coastdown will be accomplished by lowering the average coolant temperature from approximately 579 F to 575 F and by allowing the controlling rod group to come close to the full out position of the reactor core. This will allow full power operation until about mid week during the last week of October. During the remaining time until November 1,1986, the licensee will slightly reduce power as necessary to maintain plant parameters within their operating limits. End-of-cycle coastdown~is fairly common in the industry.
3.
Items of Special Interest Reactor Coolant Pump (RCP) Seal Problems On October 15, 1986, a Reactor Coolant Pump (RCP) seal leakoff low flow alarm was received in the control room. The operators determined that "A" RCP No. I seal leakoff had decreased to 0.75 gallons per minute (gpm) as indicated in the control room. Normal No. I seal leakoff is 2-3 gpm. The licensee made a reactor building (RB) entry to verify local readings with the control room remote indicator.
This data reasonably agrees.
The licensee is monitoring reactor coolant drain tank level, "A" RCP vibra-i tion, seal leakcff temperature, RCP radial bearing temperatures, and standpipe levels for changing conditions. The licensee suspects the No. 2 seal of the "A" RCP may have excessive wear.
The "C" reactor coolant pump seal, as noted in previous we(Kly status reports, continues to have higher than normal leakage (nominally 2 gpm).
The leakage continues to be approximately 6 gpm.
The licensee is monitor-ing the seal and presently expects to be able to continue full power operations until the planned outage scheduled in November 1986.
Licensee inspection and appropriate repairs will be performed on both the "A" and "C" RCP during the next outage.
