I During your visit to Braidwood Station on February 19, 1987, you commented on the current station status based upon the presentations given and the plant tour conducted.
The purpose of this letter is to provide additional information in response to your comments and to describe the action that Commonwealth Edison is taking with respect to these matters.
Utilization of Simulator Prior to Initial Criticality Initial criticality training utilizing the Production Training Center simulator has been performed and concentrated on the following initial criticality and associated startup testing procedures:
BwSU NR-31 Initial Criticality BwSU NR-32 Determination of Core Power Range for Low Power Physics Testing BwSU RC-35 Shutdown from Outside of the Main Control Room BwSU AP-30 Loss of Offsite Power BwSU RD-36 Autoratic Reactor Control BwSU NR-36 Load Swing from 35% Power BwSU FW-30D Steam Generator Level Control Response at >40% Power BwSU NR-37 Large Load Reduction BwSU NR-39 Full Power Plant Trip All six of our operating crews rr.eived this training during two days of simulator training that was completed on March 22, 1987.
Employe Education Program for Non-Management Employes You asked if the program for gaining undergraduate degrees in nuclear engineering technology, while taking courses at the plant site, would be expanded to include non-management employees.

'have decided not to extend the program at this time.
Our top priority is to increase degrees held by the current shift supervisors who are all management employees.
We are working very hard to increase the participation of these supervisors in this program'and to promote their retention.
It is likely that the program will be expanded in the Eauipment Operator Trainina and Experience Over the past several months, Braidwood has been developing a practical training program for equipment operators.
f This program stresses the use of the operator's senses in performing tasks in the field, including demonstrating various techniques under the supervision of operating shift foremen who have also been trained in the program.
The development phase is complete and the program is ready to implement.
Foremen training commenced on March 23, 1987.
Field implementation will follow.
A copy of this program, is enclosed for your information (Attachment A).
Containment Status with Respect to the Model Space Procram In the summer of 1986, Braidwood Project personnel reviewed the coating status for Units 1 & 2.
The possibility of epoxy coating the liner up to the polar crane rail was thoroughly explored.
The decision was made to forego any additional coating of Unit 1 and proceed with coating Unit 2.
Additional Unit 1 coating work was not done because of the amount of work and the special E
protections required for installed equipment.
However the existing coating provides acceptable protection to the containment liner.

The Station Work Planning Department heads up the i
station's efforts for outage planning.
This department, headed by I
an Assistant Superintendent who holds an SRO license, is composed of 34 individuals.
I They are involved in all of the following:

Planning and scheduling of the overall efforts to go through the startup program for Unit 1.

Planning, coordinating and scheduling individual 4
critical work items / maintenance items for the day to day activities of the plant.

Planning, coordinating, and scheduling of Forced Outages.
This revolves around a dynamic, living schedule which will be updated weekly and is able to address any Forced Outage depending on the circumstances.

Planning, coordinating, and scheduling of future Refueling Outages.
This department serves as the focal point to coordinate the overall efforts of the Operations, Maintenance, Technical Services, and Project Construction departments in order to address all major work activities on Unit 1.
This is accomplished through a series of three meetings held on a daily basis attended by Station upper management.
Maintenance Interface with Operations The Maintenance Department is composed of Electrical Maintenance, Instrument Maintenance, Mechanical Maintenance, and Stores.
It is headed by an Assistant Superintendent and is comprised of 223 individuals working 5 days per week, 24 hours2.777778e-4 days <br />0.00667 hours <br />3.968254e-5 weeks <br />9.132e-6 months <br /> per day, on a 3 shift coverage.
Saturday's are currently being covered on a 3 shift, 24 hours2.777778e-4 days <br />0.00667 hours <br />3.968254e-5 weeks <br />9.132e-6 months <br /> basis and Sunday's are manned with appropriate personnel to support critical activities.
Currently between 10% and 25% of our maintenance personnel are assigned to the afternoon and night shifts, with the goal being 25% on each of these shifts and the remaining 50% on day shift.
Contractor personnel are also available to assist the station as necessary to support operations activities.
Work activities including corrective maintenance, preventative maintenance, and surveillances are scheduled and conducted on a round the clock schedule.
