Dear Dr. Moran:
This is in: response to Dr. Denton's letter requesting comments on the Executive Summary for the ALWR Utility Requirements Document.
The task force is to be commended for attempting to address problems and establish criteria early on, and the goals laid out appear to be complete and reasonable. However, to a certain extent the document as a whole strikes me as somewhat of a motherhood statement.
I don't perceive our current problems in the industry stemming so much from existing technology as from the polarized attitudes between the public and the industry. As the polarization worsens, the industry is becoming more defensive and less self-critical. We'll be back at the same position with "new" technology if well-trained people with good attitudes (i.e. proud of industry, but not complacent or unwilling to accept criticism or to continually seek improvement) are not predominant in the work force.
Sincerely, G. Lucas Associate Professor
