SUMMARY

OF SEPTEMBER 11, 1986 MEETING TO DISCUSS BWOG STEAM GENERATOR COMMITTEE'S ACTIVITIES On September 11, 1986, the NRC staff met with representatives of the BWOG

- Steam Generator Comittee. This meeting was requested by the owners group to discuss their ongoing activities. Enclosure 1 is a list of meeting attendees. Copies of viewgraphs provided by the owners group are also enclosed (Enclosure 2).

The purpose of the BW0G Steam Generator Comittee is to maintain steam generator reliability. The comittee has nine areas under consideration:

(1) secondary side fouling; (2) corrosion assisted fatigue (lane region);

(3) fretting; (4) tube diameter distortions; (5) intergranular attack - lower tube sheet; (6) erosion; (7) intergranular attack - upper tube sheet; (8) primary side corrosion; and (9) component fatigue. The steam generator comittee has ten projects to address these problem areas as shown on Table 1 of Enclosure 2.

Two projects were discussed by the BWOG Comittee: (1) water slap cleaning of the steam generator; and (2) once-through steam generator (OTSG) sleeving.

Water slap is a technique used to clean steam generator fouling. The owners group considers the water slap technology to be proprietary. The owners group feels that the steam generator fouling that has been observed is not caused by in-place corrosion; rather, crud is being carried into the steam generator from the feedwater system. The fouling causes hydraulic problems because not as much feed flow can be pumped in a fouled 0TSG; however, the overall heat transfer efficiency of the steam generator is not affected.

-The presentation on the OTSG sleeving included the sleeve functional requirements, sleeve design, and tooling. Currently, about 500 sleeves are being installed at Rancho Seco.
