l l
The packaging consists of a-primary containment vessel-(20.5" 0D x 23.4" p
g OH) enclosed inside a secondary containment vessel and radiation shield b
i (32.5" 0D x 39.0" OH). The 15 milliliter water sample is contained I
I within an undefined sample cask. ~ Additionally, four iodine collection NI I
cartridges and four.offgas vials are maintained inside the foam shoring I
above the sample cask.
Loose vermiculite surrounds the perimeter of the l
l sample cask to absorb the water sample should leakage occur.
Completely g
g surrounding the secondary containment vessel and radiation shield is a i
I foam filled steel encased overpack (48.0" OD x 66.0" OH) which provides H
I impact and thermal protection.
If I
l The primary containment vessel which is constructed of 304 stainless g
i steel varying in thickness from 3/4" to 1.25" is provided with double p
l Viton 0-ring seals and a sealed test port between the seals for leak i
i testing.
The assembly is secured with eight, 3/8"-16 UNC x 8" long N
I screws.
N I
E The secondary containment vessel and radiation shield provides 0.75" l

thick steel and 5.1" thick lead shielding in the radial direction, 2.0" g
$N thick steel and 5.1" thick lead shielding on the bottom, and 3.5" thick N
l steel and 4.8" thick lead shielding on the top. The lid is secured with l
l g
eight, 1.0"-8 UNC x 3.0 long bolts.
The lid is sealed with two Viton 0-rings with a sealed test port between the seals for leak testing.
l
@u y
58 The overpack provides about 7.25" thick foam on the sides and about 13" p
o<
on the top and bottom.
The two halves of the overpack are held together i
5 by eight, 3/4"-10 UNC x 1.5" long bolts. A Neoprene gasket prevents i
g rain water from entering the overpack.

The weight of the package including a maximum sample cask weight of l
1,375 pounds, is about 12,800 pounds.

Transportation Certification Branch Ap3roval Record Model 10. PAS-1 Package Docket No. 71-9184 By application dated October 31, 1986, Nuclear Packaging, Inc. requested an amendment to the Model No. PAS-1 package design to delete specific sample casks within the package. The isotopic contents have been increased from 43 to 50 curies to include neutron activation products.
The Operating Procedures have been modified to include storage procedures for a disassembled or assembled configuration.
The changes do not have a significant effect on the ability of the package design to meet the requirements of 10 CFR Part 71.
Containment is provided by the primary and secondary containment vessels which remain unaffected by these changes.
