MacDonald Introduction A meeting was held at the request of the Department of Energy (D0E) at Silver Spring, Maryland, on December 3, 1986, with regard to proposed responses to the NRC letter concerning the Model No. MH-1A cask design.

Discussion On February 19, 1985, DOE requested approval of the Model No. MH-1A cask design and on May 31, 1985, the NRC staff requested additional information regarding the application. Westinghouse Hanford Company made a presentation to the NRC staff concerning their preliminary assessment and plans for an NRC certification of the cask design. An outline of the presentation is enclosed with this memorandum.

OEc 0 g 1985 The Files 2 DOE indicated that the response to the NRC request for additional information would be provided in a completely revised safety analysis report for the package. Preliminary calculations indicate that due to the hardness of the impact limiters, the containment vessel may not meet the criteria of Regulatory Guide 7.6 for the normal conditions of transport. It was indicated that based on the type and form of the contents, the package would meet the requirements following the hypothetical accident conditions of transport.

No schedule was established for additional meetings or the submission of the revised safety analysis report.
