I I INTRODUCTION I The objective of this monthly report is to document compliance with the nonradiological (aquatic) environmental monitoring programs specified in Sections 3.1.la(4), 3.1.2a., and 4.6.1 of the Environmental Technical Specifications (ETS). These programs have been carried out as directed I in the Environmental Controls Aquatic Sampling Manual. Program elements being conducted under contract to GPU Nuclear Corporation include benthic macroinvertebrates, ichthyoplankton, fish population dynamics (seine and electrofishing), creel surveys, and water quality. The ultimate purpose of these studies is to obtain a database sufficient to establish the natural fluctuations within the ecosystem and identify any significant biological alterations resulting from the TMINS. .
Compliance with all programs specified in the ETS and detailed in the Aquatic Sampling Manual was achieved in October 1986 (Table 1). The fol-loving changes in the THINS Aquatic Sampling Schedule vere made during October: electrofishing, originally scheduled for 9 October was impeded by rain, therefore sampling was rescheduled and conducted on 16 October.
Details are provided in the following pages wherein progress is described for each program.
Data presented in this report are considered provisional, pending subse-quent proofing, analysis, and presentation in the annual report.
I Vater Quality Analysis Objective: To measure select physical and chemical parameters of the Susquehanna River in the vicinity of Three Mile Island I Nuclear Station (THINS) concurrent with General Ecological Sur-vey samples.
I I 1 I
I I Progress: Vater quality samples were collected on 15 October 1986 and forwarded to THI-EC (Table 1). U.S. EPA Method 160.1 was used to determine total filterable residue (TDS) in samples collected on 17 September 1986. EA Chemistry Laboratory results are presented in Table 2.
Select water quality parameters were also measured at sampling times and locations of the General Ecological Survey.
I Benthic Macroinvertebrates objective: To assess the abundance, distribution, and diversity I of benthic macroinvertebrates at three stations in the vicinity of THINS.
I Progress: Benthos sampling on 15 October 1986 consisted of rep-licate (4) samples taken at each of the three benthos stations (Table 1).
I Ichthyoplankton Objective: To determine species composition, relative abun-dance, density, and seasonal and spatial distribution of ich-thyoplankton at eight stations in the vicinity of THINS.
I Progress: Ichthyoplankton field sampling for the 1986 season was completed with the 26 August collection.

I I Seine I
Objective: To assess species composition, relative abundance, seasonal and spatial distribution, condition factor, occurrence of parasites, anomalies and fish kills, and species diversity of fishes vulnerable to seine capture at six stations in the vicin-I ity of THINS.
Progress: Seine collections were taken at each of the six samp-ling stations on 14 October 1986 (Table 1). Fishes taken on 4 and 25 June were identified, measured, and weighed. June seine data were tabulated and recorded on length frequency data sheets.
I Electrofishing Objective: To assess species composition, relative abundance, occurrence of parasites, anomalies, and species diversity of fishes vulnerable to electrofisher capture at six stations in I the vicinity of THINS.
Progress: Electrofishing at the six stations was completed on 16 October 1986 (Table 1). Samples consisted of 195 fish of 14 species (Table 3). More fish (111 specimens) were collected at Station 11B1 than at any other station. The largest number of species (9) were also collected at Station 11B1. Pumpkinseed I and valleye dominated the catch (90 and 37 specimens, respec-tively). Three specimens of special interest were juvenile American shad, which were collected at Station 10A3. Ectopar-asites observed on fishes included: anchor vorms (Lernaea) on two redbreast sunfish and one pumpkinseed; and leeches on two redbreast sunfish and one white crappie. Cysts were seen on three pumpkinseed and one white sucker; and fungus was seen on E 3 I
I three pumpkinseed. Pumpkinseed were also seen with miscell-aneous lesions (one specimen) and in an emaciated condition (three specimens). One pumpkinseed and two largemouth bass exhibited wounds related to angling (e.g., hooks in mouth, mouth fungus, eye injuries, etc.).
I Creel Survey Objective: To investigate the extent of success of sport-fishing, and determine angler residence and use of catch, in the Susquehanna River near THINS.
I Progress: Creel surveys were conducted on 5, 18, 22 and 31 October 1986 (Table 1). Interviews consisted of 185 anglers who reportedly fished 541.75 hours8.680556e-4 days
0.0208 hours
1.240079e-4 weeks
2.85375e-5 months
, caught 612 fish, and harvested 193 fish (32% of the total catch)(Tables 4 through 7). The average catch per effort (c/e) and harvest per effort (h/e) were 1.13 and 0.36 fish per hour, respectively. Smallmouth bass were the predominant fishes caught (355 specimens), and harvested (88 I specimens) by anglers. Most anglers (134), most fish caught (476), and most fish harvested (126), and most hours fished (413.50) were recorded at the General Reservoir. The highest c/e (4.10) was recorded at the Vest Dam. Anglers were predomin-antly residents of York or Dauphin Counties and the majority indicated that they eat at least a portion of their catch.
