SUBJECT:

Green River UMTRAP site, site visit follow-up

SUMMARY

Mr. Smith informed me that after attempts to resolve data derived from outcrops and well logs, he wished not to make changes in geological cross-sections, particularly section AA' in the dRAP (page D-93). This refutes conclusions and agreements we made folicwing our site visit (trip report in preparation). I believe the changes we agreed to more accurately reflected the structure and . stratigraphy of the site. Mr.

Smith also informed me he intended to reexamine cuttings and cores of drill holes, and edit and/or change logs in the RAP. I expressed concern that this action would appear to be changing data in order to support interpretations: an unacceptable method of resolving NRC comments on technical issues, and an unacceptable scientific method. Mr. Smith and I agree that our disagreements over detailed site geology may be academic, and that our differing opinions do not influence the site's geologic suitability. However, the site's detailed geologic setting may have important implications for ground water pathways and other hydrogeologic aspects of the site.

ACTION REQUIRED: 1) Continued consideration of the site's geology

2) referral of potential hydrogeologic issues to NRC's sitehydrogeologist(M. Young)
3) completion of trip report
4) review of geologic-log revisions in upcoming DOE / TAC documents PERSON DOCUMENTING CONVERSATION: Joel Grimm, geologist ACTION TAKEN: 1) conversation record distributed to M. Young,
2) further communication with DOE / TAC planned
3) trip report completed on (date)
