SUBJECT:

Waterford SES Unit 3 Docket No. 50-382 Radiation Protection Personnel

DearsMr. Martin:

As discussed with members of your Staff, LP&L is presently conducting a search to fill vacancies in the Radiation Protection Group, including the position of Radiation Protection Superintendent.

Recognizing the importance of the radiation protection function, LP&L is immediately implementing the following interim actions to ensure that adequate technical expertise in radiation protection is available at the Waterford 3 site:

1.

An experienced person, who meets the Regulatory Guide 1.8, September 1975 edition, will attend PORC meetings in order to provide radiological expertise to that group.

2.

Additional personnel with Health Physics technical expertise will be detailed to the plant site on a full time basis to provide technical assistance to the Acting Radiation Protection Superintendent.

These measures will remain in effect until permanent LP&L plant staff members are hired and trained to fill the existing vacancies in the Radiation Protection group.

Very truly yours, hh N.S. Carns
