Dear Mr. Guinyard:

SEQUOYAH NUCLEAR PLANT (SQN)

- INVESTIGATION OF PLANT IMPACT ON DISSOLVED OXYGEN LEVELS IN CHICKAMAUGA RESERVOIR - RHODAMINE WT DYE STUDY t

Reference:

Letter, Martin E. Rivers to Philip L. Stewart, April 30, 1987 The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) requests approval to use Rhodamine WI dye in a field study in Chickamauga Reservoir in the vicinity of the I;

underwater dam (TRM 483.76) on June 15-16.

The dye will be used to determine the mixing effects of the underwater dam on downstream water quality.

The dye study is a joint project between TVA and Tennessee Technological University (TTU), and is part of the SQN study connaitted to in the reference letter.

Russell Brown, Center for Management.

Utilization, and Protection of Water Resources, Cookeville, Tennessee, is the main TTU contact for the study.

The dye will be injected about 1,000 feet upstream of the underwater iI

dam, with six monitoring locations, each about 500 feet apart, established downstream to measure the dye concentration. The amount of dye injected will be calculated to ensure that concentrations will be
j 10 ppb or less at the nearest water supply intake, U.S. Army-Volunteer

(

Army Ammunition Plant, at TRM 473.0 (about 11 miles downstream).

1 l

TVA will verbally confirm the test times at least three days prior to i

the actual dye injection. A confirmation letter will be provided after

  • j the test which will detail the maximum dye concentrations measured j

during the investigation.

If there are any questions regarding this request, please call Madonna E. Martin of my staff at (615) 632-6695 in Knoxville.

Sincerely.
