ISSUANCE OF AMENDMENT NO. 6 TO FACILITY OPERATING LICENSE NO. CX RENSSELAER POLYTECHNIC INSTITUTE The Conunission has issued Amendment No. 6 to Facility Operating License No.

CX-22 for the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute critical experiment reactor facility. The amendment consists of changes to the license and Technical Specifications in response to your submittal dated October 17,.1986.

This amendment authorizes the receipt and possession, but not use, of 600 unirradiated SPERT (F-1) fuel pins containing 21.12 kg of U-235, under the license. These fuel pins will later be utilized when the reactor has been converted to use low enriched uranium. The amendment also changes the Technical Specifications to' allow each storage tube in the fuel storage 3 vault to contain not more than fifteen SPERT fuel pins at any one time.

Copies of Amendment No. 6 and the related Safety Evaluation are enclosed.
