Murley, Regional Administrator United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission Region I 631 Park Avenue King of Prussia, PA 19406
Dear Dr. Murley:
NRC TLD IRRADIATION STUDY SALEM GENERATING STATION DOCKET NOS. 50-272/311 Enclosed are the results from the second round of irradiations of our Panasonic UD-802 TLD badges by INEL.
Preliminary results were g iven to Mr.
D.
Collins of your staff during his Salem inspection the week of September 29, 1986.
We are confident in the results of this round ot beta irradiations and anticipate receipt of the documentation of the irradiations and our per fo rma nc e.
Incidentally, our existing dose algorithm has been modified to identify and correct the beta dose to a TLD in contact with a depleted Uranium slab.
We are still testing this modification.
We have conducted two rounds of TLD beta irradiations with P.
Plato, University of Michigan, in conjunction with the INEL irradiations.
Mr.
R. Nimitz of your staff has copies of these results.
We are concerned over the discrepancies noted by INEL as a result of the first round of irradiations and would like a final copy of those results.
We are also awaiting information on the beta source type and configuration and irradiation protocol.
Since no modifications were made to our algorithm concerning Thallium identification, we suspect the irradiation procedure to be the reason for the discrepancies in the results of the first round of irradiations by INEL.
Provision of the information on INEL's protocol and official results of both irradiation tests will allow us to ef fectively investigate the discrepancies.
We ask that you provide the requested information to Mr.
J.
L.
Kotsch of my staff at your earliest convenience.
Your cooperation in this matter is appreciated.
Sincerely,
/
