Beaver Valley Power Station, Unit No. 1 Docket No. 50-334, License No. DPR-66 Appendix R - Structural Steel Fire-Coating Gentlemen:

'By letter dated July 10, 1985, we notified you of our intention to coat the structural steel surfaces at issue with a qualified fire proof material.

In addition, we requested that our original exemption request remain open pending completion of the coating, and requested a schedular exemption from the requirements of 10CFR50.48(c).

Your letter of November 21, 1985 determined that our proposed schedule for completion of the structural steel fire-coating, in conjunction with a one-hour fire watch (per Tech. Spec. 3.7.15) in the interim, was a reasonable approach to resolution of this issue and that a schedular exemption was not necessary.

Based on the results of our efforts to coat the exposed structural steel beam surfaces in the subject areas and our recent phone conversation, we have concluded that our original request for exemption will no longer be necessary.

The fire coating effort has been completed and minor exceptions have been evaluated and summarized below:

Because of interferences which limited access to some of the beams in the ceiling areas, three (3) beams (of the total 255) were not coated completely.

Two of the beams were determined to be non-structural (used for framing ductwork, cable trays, etc.) and are not required for support of the barrier separating redundant trains. The third beam has a small surface area uncoated (8 sq. inches of the total 100 sq.

feet of beam surface) due to physical inaccessibility.

Based on the relatively small area left uncoated and the location of the subject beam, we have concluded that a fire in this area would not affect the integrity of the barrier and, as such, determined the configuration acceptable.

Because. of -the fireproof coating of the beams in the subject areas, the minor exposed surface areas evaluated and determined acceptable, and based on our recent phone conversation, it was decided that the exemption request will no longer be necessary.

We, therefore, withdraw our request for exemption regarding structural steel at Beaver Valley Unit No. 1 and consider this issue closed.
