Beaver Valley Power Station, Unit No. 1 Docket No. 50-334, License No. DPR-66 Combustible Waste Storage - Fire Protection Gentlemen:

By letter dated February 21, 1986, you requested our long-term solution to the combustible waste storage in the Primary Auxiliary Building (PAB) relative to fire protection.

In response, by letter dated April 29,

1986, we identified our intention to install an automatic sprinkler suppression system and an early-warning smoke detection system for the areas of concern in the PAB.

The top two floor levels (PAB 752 and 768) were projected to be complete during the 5th refueling outage (ending in August 1986) and the PAB 735 level was projected to be complete after the outage.

The installation is presently in

progress, however, due to unforeseen
delays, the schedule for completion of the project will not be as anticipated.

The status is as follows:

The closed-head, sprinkler system portion of the job is complete for the top two floor areas (PAB 752 and 768) with a temporary annunciation alarm established to the control room to alert operations personnel in the event of system activation.

The permanent electrical tie-ins and the early warning smoke detection system is scheduled to be installed and tested no later than November of this year.

The suppression and detection system for the PAB 735 floor level, due to the seismic restraints and overhead obstruction in the area, is projected to be completed by the end of this year.

In the interim, the administrative controls will be in effect to limit the amount of combustibles in the area.

If there are any questions or clarifications, please contact my staff.

Very truly yours, b 0N
