KStablein RCook During the December 3-4, 1985 U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission /U. S.

Department of Energy (NRC/ DOE) meeting on Seismic / Tectonic Investigations, Neil A. Norman of 8echtel National, Inc., presented on behalf of the 00E, a set of definitions meant to augment Part B of Section II of the DOE document,

" Rationale for Seismic / Tectonic Investigations for Licensing a Nuclear Waste Repository." As a result of the discussions held during the meeting, DOE agreed to use those definitions included in 10CFR60 and any modifications thereof made by amendment to 10CFR60; and the NRC agreed to provide specific comments on the definitions of terms as proposed by DOE and to address the applicability of the terms " active fault," " anticipated", and " unanticipated."

The NRC staff has reviewed DOE's list of definitions and our comments are contained in the enclosure.

The NRC's response to DOE request to address the applicability of the terms " active fault," " anticipated" and " unanticipated,"

will be provided under separate cover at a later date.
