SUBJECT:

USE OF 100% SAMS FOR YCS ANALYSIS AND BLOCK WALLS A telephone conference was conducted to discuss the acceptability of analyses perfomed using YCS input and 100% SAMs.

Mark Russell of EG & G had performed some analyses which raised a concern that a YCS analysis with 100% SAM may not provide the same margin as an NRC loading analysis, with 60% SAM, even considering the strain criteria, particularly for cold stainless steel.

There were some conservatisms in this simplified analysis, therefore, the con-clusion was not that the piping results are unacceptable but rather that a closer look is needed at some specific piping problems. 'The details of the analysis will be provided to all participants of the call for review and another conference call will be conducted next week.

Another issue was discussed concerning block walls in the. turbine building.

Lawrence Livemore Lab had previously indicated that these walls would have to be shown not to develop horizontal and vertical cracks simultaneously, for acceptability. This was based on the confimatory analysis results of the PAR north wall. Yankee noted that such a demonstration would require reanalysis of the walls for NRC loading and that such effort should not be required considering the overall results of the confirmatory analysis and the small change to the PAB north wall modifications.

The staff stated that the concern would be for adequacy of block walls that not been modified (based on a YCS analysis) and which were in the vicinity of-safety-related equipment. Yankee stated there were no such walls, and that .

they would document this in a letter.
