Review the enclosed applicant's partial response to outstanding NRC questions relative to the sacrificial shield wall's base design. (Note: We expect the appTTeant to provide analyses of the sacrificial shield wall above the base on or about August 15, 1975).

Robert E. Heineman 2-JUL 1 0 1975 BACKGROUND:
On' March 21, 1974, the applicant submitted a report entitled " Sacrificial Shield Wall" in response to comitments made in the PSAR and to a post CP item in the SER. On April ll, 1974, we requested technical assistance (TAR-908) from E B, SEB and CSB in evaluating this report. As a consequence, we transmitted questions from SEB and CSB to the applicant on July 8, 1974. The applicant responded to these questions on February ll,1975 in a report entitled " Sacrificial Shield Wall Design Supplemental Infomation". CSB reviewed this supplemental information and identified deficiencies in the analysis and provided guidance with respect to an acceptable method for computing pressure response within the shield annulus upon a recirculation pipe break. This infomation was transmitted to the applicant as a request for additional information on Mcy 15,1975. The applicant has submitted a partial response to this request for information (i.e., that portion which the applicant claims is the bounding condition for designing the base structure). It is this partial response to our request for additional infonnation for which we request continued technical assistance. We need an evaluation of the information in order to determine whether the Post CP " Hold", regarding the top of its reactor pedestal, shculd be released.
