In response to your technical assistance request of July 16,1975, the Contaismaat systems Branch has reviewed the applicant's submittal of June 26, 1975. Per our request (memo R. Tedesco to R. DeYoung, May 2, 1975), the applicant has provided a revised pressure response analysis for the sacrificial shield annulus using the RELAP-3 camputer coda. This analysis is applicable only to the shield wall base design. We understand that further calculations will be submitted on about August 15, 1975 covering the shield wall design above the habe.
CSB Evaluation Using the applicant's input for a 60-node model of the annulus, we performed i
similar pressure response analyses using the RELAP-3 computer program. Our j
results confirm the pressures calculated by the applicant. For design basis purposes the applicant has increased the values of peak calculated differential l
pressure by a factor of 1.4 to account for uncertainties in the fluid dynamic phencuena. This is in accordance with our recommendation.

Based on the applicant's use of the RELAP-3 computer code, the application of a 40% design margin, and the results of our confirmatory calculations we conclude that the applicant's analysis of the shield annulus is acceptable for application to the shield wall base design.

As noted in our mano of May 2,1975 (R. Tedesco to R. DeYoung), SEB should verify the capability of the flow limiting doors which encompass the recircult. tion lines, to withstand a differential pressure of 1000 psi.
