SUCARY _OF MEETINr. l' ELD 0:1 FEMl!ARY ll,1977, TO DISCUSS fIETCOS FOR CC"SI:lI?T. DY:!A"IC LOADS FOR STRUCTV!?AL DESIR:! 0F THE IIP.7. II CC iTAI!;'!E?iT A meeting was held on February 11, 1977, between representativas of the ifark II cuners, the General Electric Co., (GE) and the fiRC Staff. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss with GE and the MarF II owners the prcposal for cusntifyinq the use of square root of the sun of the-square r:ethod (S2SS) for combininc cynamic leads in structural and mechanical ceuonnent desinn. The attendees list and ccpics of sor:.a of the slides given to the attendees are enclosed. Copics of the remainder of the slides are available in ny office.

l For static 1 cads / responses (Enclosure 1) and for dynamic loads / responses I with large differences in frequencies (Enclosure 2) the obvious method

! for combining loads is to sn the absolute sum of the peak loads.

l however, for dynanic loads /resnonses with comparable frequencies GE pro-poses to use the SRSS method (Enclosure 3).

i Currently GE is using a qualitative nethod for selecting when SRSS is to be used. At the necting GE presented a program for developing a method for. cuantifying the limits of the SRSS procedure and to develop practical computational programs to' carry out ecuivalent SRSS oroce-dures for multiole load-responso ccabinations (Enclosure 4). The overall objective is to use probability theory and overall probability' concept for developina a cumulative distribution function plot-(C0F)_

' showing the cocbined amplitude of the dynamic loads vs the probability eya 8605220420 77041s PDR C

-2 APR 181977 that the combined loads will not be exceeded (Enclosure G). Then develop critoria for selecting when S?.SS will-be used. The proposed program tasks are as fo11cus:

(1) Task 1. Develop computer ;,rograms for combining two or more randondynamicloads(Enclosure 5).

(a) Task 1(A) Develop a Cenputer Progran to conhine two random dynr.mic loads using unifom step time phase shift (Encicsurc 6).

(b) Task 1(P,) Develop a Comouter Program to codine trio or nore randem dynamic loads utfr; l'onte Carlo tcchniques for phase shift '

(Enclosure 7).

(2) Task 2. Select key / typical arcas of ihrh II to cenpare the nothods of load cenbinations (Enclosura 0).

(3) Task 3. Quantify the application liaits of SRSS (Encic:ure 3).

(4) Task 4. Establish Casis for the procedures for the use of SRSS (Enclosure 10).

(5) Task 5. Itave a 2 or 3 day Seminar with !!RC and Industry to present the results of the program (Enclosure 11).

l The overall program as scheduled'(Enclosure 12) shows that the ovners l group expect the procram to be cen;11eted by !'ay,1977. The Task

' schedule and the orcani:stions responsible for performing the tasks are shown on Enclosure 11.

The staff indicated that in order for us to evaluate the program we suggested they supply us with a report v,hich should contain:

(1) Pore detail information on assumotions and judcaents made in developing the methods and computor prograns including details on the computer programs.

(2) Additional examples of combinations using realistic load /

response functions.
