S' Spencer, Chief, Reactor Construction Branch Region V LAMILLAR TEARS IN WNP-2 STEEL C0liTAIHMENT VESSEL During the field fabrication of the WMP-2 steel containment vessel, lamillar tearing of the vessel plate occurred adjacent to the welds which attach the two circumferential support platform ring girders. The weld areas were visually and ultrasonically examined and all unacceptable defect indications were repaired, except for one 1" x 2" indication which is awaiting scaffold placement for later construction activities.
The vessel was penumatically tested at 115% of design pressure as specified by the ASitE Section III code. Subsequent ultrasonic examina-tion disclosed no discernible growth in known indications and no occurr-ence of any new defect indications.
We have followed this situation closely and have concluded that the repair program is adequate and acceptable. We feel, however, that the concurrence of the Technical Assistance Branch with our conclusion would be appropriate. Therefore, the details associated with this fabricatinn difficulty are enclosed for yo v review. We would appreciate receiving the results of your evaluation by November 14, 1975.
