Evaluation of Exhaust Gas Stack Monitor Filters in an Emergency I. Purpose The purpose of this procedure is to provide the Emergency Director with information related to the emission of radio-nuclides through the stack exhaust system during an emergency condition at the MURR.

II. Considerations A. Determination of radionuclide air concentration requires that filters be collected and that the amount of time the filters were on line be known.

B. It is possible for emissions to be of a long or short duration. Therefore, careful consideration must be given by those personnel involved in order to determine the proper time at which filters should be changed and analyzed.

III. Procedure A. Emergency exhaust air filter changes shall be performed by persons designated by the Emergency Director. New filters are located in the Stack Monitor Cabinet drawer.

B. Obtain a portable survey instrument and proceed to west tower location of stack monitor. Take readings with survey instrument to determine dose levels are not above 100 mrem per hour. If levels are significantly above

, this level, consult Emergency Director and await instruc-tions.

C. Obtain particulate, iodine and gas monitor readings from Control Room by using the communications box. If con-tainment has already been evacuated or no communication is possible, use meters located on exhaust gas monitor.

Do not use walkie-talkies as their radio frequency may interfere with stack monitor. Record monitor readings on filter report form.

Turn off pump.

E. Wearing gloves, remove particulate filter and iodine cartridge and place in a sealable plastic bag.

F. Install new filters into exhaust gas stack monitor.

G. Turn pump on and record time and air flow.

H. Return filter samples to Reactor Chemistry or site desig-nated by the Emergency Director for analysis. When in low background area, check filters to ensure they are not highly radioactive.

I. Analysis will be returned to Emergency Director for evaluation of proper steps to be taken as per Emergency Plan.
