a ATTACHMENT 1.
Summary During the performance of the Preservice Inspection (PSI) magnetic parti-cle test (MT) on the Reactor Vessel studs, numerous circumferential orien-ted linear indications were detected.
2.
Immediate Action Taken A Nonconformance and Disposition Report was initiated to determine correc-tive action.
Mr. L. M. Rabenau, Lead Compliance Engineer, Beaver Valley Power Station 3 Unit No. 2, Notified Mr. D. Limroth, NRC Region I, of the concern on April 1, 1987 3.
Description of Deficiency Numerous circumferential oriented linear indications were identified on a l 1 the Reactor Vessel studs.
4.
Analysis of Safety Implication The linear indications exceed the ASME XI acceptance criteria, IWB BG-1 1980 - Winter 1980.
S.
Corrective Action to Resolve the Deficiency Initial corrective action was to blend / grind the surface indications to remove.
In addition, one stud, representative of the indications found, was forwarded to Westinghouse R&D for analysis.
Preliminary evaluation results have been received.
These results conclude that the indications on the studs were caused by the presence of rubbing, scratching and dent marks due to mechanical distress.
No evidence of any cracking was confirmed.
Any additional corrective action will be dependent upon final evaluation and disposition of the N&D.
6.
Additional Report It is anticipated that an additional report will be issued by May 30, 1987.
