1.0 REFERENCE 1.1 American Welding Society (AWS D1.1-75) 1.2 An Approved AWS Filler Metal Specification 1.3 L. K. Comstock, Procedure 4.9.1 2.0 PURPOSE / SCOPE 2.1 To provide instruction for handling, storing and issuing weld filler metal.

2.2 To prevent use of unauthorized material for construction.

3.0 PROCEDURE 3.1 Classification of all weld filler metal (Electrodes) will be in accordance with the applicable American Welding Society Filler Metal Specifications.

3.2 Electrode Storage 3.2.1 Welding electrodes will be stored by Phillips Getschow Co. in T

hermatically sealed containers.

Oy The L. K. Comstock warehouse foreman will withdraw welding electrodes (in hermetically sealed containers) from Phillips Getschow Co. using the Phillips Getschow Co. Stores Request.

3.0 PROCtHRE - continued 3.2.2 Weld.ing electrodes received by L. K. Comstock will be in the following containers:

3.2.2.1 E308/E309, E7018 - Hermetically sealed containers.

3.2.2.2 E6013, E6010 - Clean dry containers.

3.2.3 The electrodes will be transferred to L. K. Comstock warehouse and/or tool crib for storage. When sealed containers are opened, the electrode holder end of the rod will be painted white for identification, 3.2.3.1 E308/E309 and E7018 electrodes will be placed in temperature controlled electrode storage ovens.

3.2.3.2 E6010 and E6013 electrodes will be placed in separate l

clean, dry containers.

3.2.4 Electrodes of dissimilar chemical composition shall not be kept in the same storage oven.

3.2.4.1 All Tool Crib rod ovens and containers will be l

labeled to indicate the classification and heat number of electrodes they contain.

BRAIDWOOD 4.3.10 QA SECT 3.0 PROCEDURE - continued 3.2.5.3.2 Redrying shall consist of heating the electrodes for at least two (2) hours at 450*F to 500*F for electrodes conforming to AWS AS.1, or for at least one (1) hour at 700*F to 800*F for electrodes conforming to AWS A5.5.

3.2.5.4 E6010. E6013 electrodes will be maintained at room temperature in separate, clean dry containers.

3.2.5.5 Electrodes that show any ofsthe following conditions will be bent and discarded. '

3.2.5.5.1 Excessive moisture.

3.2.5.5.2 Coating blisters.

3.2.5.5.3 Direct contact with water.

3.2.5.5.4 Cracked coating.

3.3 Issuance of Material 3.3.1 The L. K Comstock warehouse foreman or tool crib attendant shall issue electrodes in clean dry containers for transporting to work areas.

3.3.2 A Filler Metal Withdrawal Authorization Fom (Form #57) will be m

The ovens containing welding electrodes shall be kept heated per the requirements of Paragraph 3.2.5.1.

The Filler Metal Withdrawal Tab shall be completed in accordance with the

attached Filler Metal Withdrawal Instructions.

(Attachment A) 3.3.3.1 The tool crib attendant shall not issue any E309 or E7018 electrodes from the storage ovens that have not been maintained as specified per Paragraph 3.2.5.1 of this procedure.

3.3.3.2 Upon the presentation of a valid welder 10 card by the certified welder specified on the Forin 57, the warehouse foreman or electrode crib attendant shall issue the oven or container and electrodes to the welder along with the Form 57.

3.3.3.3 During the days welding activities, the welder shall enter the WIR Number on the Filler Metal Withdrawal Tab for each installation welded.

(Reference Attachment A).

3.3.4 Upon completion of the days welding activities, the welder shall return the electrode ovens, electrode containers and all electrodes along with the Form #57 with the foreman's review and signature to the electrode crib.

3.3.4.1 At the end of each working shift the LKC warehouse foreman or electrode crib attendant shall verify that all electrode ovens have been returned. Any ovens not returned shall be noted and QC shall be notified.

3.3.4.2 The crib attendant shall remove any unused weld rod from the portable oven or containers and return it to the appropriate location.

3.4 Control of Weld Stubs and Spoiled Electrodes 3.4.1 Each welder shall carry a stub pail for spent or spoiled electrodes and shall be near the work in progress.

3.4.2 The welder shall deposit all discarded stubs (unused portion of electrodes and spoiled rod) in the stub pail provided.

3.4.3 The welder shall discard any spoiled electrodes, using the stub _,

pail provided. All electrodes which are soiled, wet, contaminated, oil-impregnated or unidentifiable shall be considered " spoiled". Electrodes which have been " spoiled' shall be bent and discarded.

BRAIDWOOD 4.3.10 Q sic 7 3.0 PROCEDURE - continued 3.4.4 Each welder shall empty his pail daily at the end of his shift or a't the completion of the welding activity. All stubs and spoiled electrodes shall be deposited in a locked, uniquely identified barrel. Stub pails shall be used for no other purpose.

3.4.4.1 Each foreman shall walk-down his inmediate work area at the end of each shif t or at the completion of welding activity to verify that no weld electrodes, stubs, or spoiled electrodes have been lef t out in x,

open. All stub pails shall be locked up in gang boxes or deposited in the crib (s) during the off time.

3.4.5 Under no' circumstances shall any filler metal be removed from stub pails or the designated receptacle for use in welding.

Such activity shall subject the welder to disciplinary action, as deemed appropriate by the LKC Project Manager.

NOTE:

Each welder must consider the work to be performed when withdrawing electrodes from the portable oven, in order to reduce waste of electrodes and to provide bett' r control of weld stubs and spoiled material.

Use of low-hydrogen electrodes in conjunction with hot storage will minimize problems of hydrogen cracking. Observation of procedures will contribute c

substantially to weld quality by eliminating hydrogen, which may be introduced by water, water vapor or oil. Welders are encouraged to minimize the time between the withdrawal of electrodes from heated ovens and their use in welding.
