THE pose orf;ca sex 340 h OKONITE Ramsey, New Jer sey 07446 COMPANY
'C***'
June 5, 1985 Mr. Thomas Eisenbart 84EE317 g f,[;7;gy Sargent 5 Lundy Engineers 55 East Monroe Street EPEo Chicago, Illinois 60603 5
Dear Mr. Eisenbart:
RECEIVED Project Nos. 4683/4 Comonwealth Edison Company Braidwood Station - Units 1 and 2 600V Power and Control Cable SSL Soecification L-2823 CECO P.O. No. 207114 The following is in response to Mr. J. J. Bojan's letter to our Mr. E. J.
Bartolucci of May 13, 1985 conceming the Braidwood Construction Analysis Program observations on cable bending radii.
It was found in the Program that several instances existed where the cables' minimum training radii criteria had been violated.
The Okonite Company has no data, nor are we aware of any data, or service experience where cables have been shown to be unaffected by being in-stalled with bending radii as small as listed in Appendix A of Mr. Bojan's letter.
We do know that bending radii in accord with our published recomendations do not have any effect on cable life or integrity since insta11 tion prac-tices such as we recommend have been used for decades with no problems resulting from the bending radii being low.
In some cases, we have given some slight relief from our 4 x CD recomendation'to 3x or 2.5x, but we have not gone below this.
Specific installation cases reviewed by Mr. Bartolucci during his visit where no visible wrinkling of the jacket and no apparent physical distor-tion have occurred and where the bending radii of 2.5 x the OD or larger have been maintained are acceptable.
We cannot in the absence of data or experience render a judgment as to whether the observations on the bending radii made in the Analysis Program are design, significant. We can, however, state that installation of cable with bending radii within our published recomendations will have no effect on the ability of the cable to perfonn its function over its expected life.
Very truly yours, THE OKONITE COMP NY
,y
