SUBJECT:
Request for Formal Interpretation (Per Our Phone Conversation October 1, 1984)'
Inquiry 1 - Table 5.26.1 in the 1975 Edition of AWS Dl.1 does not permit welding of fillet welds on material on unlimited thickness when qualifying.a. welder on a 6 inch Sch. 80 pipe (Footnote 3).
This footnote was applied in the 1976 and later Editions of the Code.
Is it permissible to apply this change to the earlier Edition?
~
Inquiry 2 - Does "Unlimj.ted thickness" in the above listed footnote mean that there is no minimum or maximum limit?
Inq'tiry 3 - Due to a contract date in 1975, prior to the publication of D1.3 Code, welding of material less than 1/8" is accomplished meeting the requirements of the Dl.1 Code.
Is it permissible to perform this welding to the Dl.1 Code even though later Editions state that it is not
~
intended for materials less than 1/8"?
Thank you for the consideration of these items.
Sincerely,'
0 Y d.L//)
