The Commission was briefed by the NRC staff on a number of proposed regulatory initiatives to enhance the safety of boiling water reactors.
Mr. Vince Boyer, Senior Vice President of Philadelphia Electric Company (representing NUMAFC) and Mr. Terry Pickens, Chairman of the Boiling Water Reactor Owners' Group presented the Commission with a summary of some of the industry's activities on the BWR containment integrity issues.
The Commission requested that ACRS and CRGR review the staff proposal on BWR containments (taking into consideration other staff programs, including NUREG-1150) and provide that information to the Commission for consideration.
The staff should also consult with the Commission prior to going ahead with a generic letter.
The Commission requested that the staff provide estimated core melt frequencies for those plants identified in the briefing slides.
The staff was also requested to provide its rationale for not pursuing rulemaking as a preferred solution to address the' staff's concerns.
