i This refers to the inspection conducted by Mr. Stephen Alexander of this office on February 3-4, 1987, of your facility in Huntsville, Alabama, and to the 4
i discussions of our findings with Mr. James Gleason and other members of your
' staff at the conclusion of the inspection.
iL The purpose of this inspection was to gather information on the results of i
environmental qualification testing of certain Amp Corporation electrical connector assemblies and Marathon Special Products Corporation teminal blocks i
performed by Wyle for the Comonwealth Edison Company and the Pennsylvania Power and Light Company respectively. Areas examined during the inspection l.
and our findings are discussed in the enclosed report. Within these areas, the inspection. consisted of an examination of procedures and representative j
records, interviews with personnel, and observations by the inspector.
Within the' scope of this inspection, we found no instance where you failed to meet NRC requirements. The inspector's review confirmed that the testing had been conducted in accordance with specifications and regulatory requirements and that'the testing was technically adequate for its intended purposes. The i
results demonstrated the 1iability of the Amp nylon insulated connectors and 4
i one of the Marathon 1600 terminal blocks to meet their specified functional performance requirements under the simulated accident conditions, and that the i
l-failures appeared to represent environmentally induced failures; thus rendering them unqualified for the applications for which they were tested. The results of testing on the newer design, nuclear grade Amp connectors indicated that these connectors could be qualified for the service and harsh environmental 11 ccnditions under which they perforir.ed satisfactorily in the test.
