Dr. J. Nelson Grace, Regional Administrator 101 Marietta Street, NW, Suite 2900 Atlanta, Georgia 30323

Dear Dr. Grace:

SEQUOYAH NUCLEAR PLANT (SQN) UNITS 1 AND 2 - NRC-OIE REGION II INSPECTION REPORT NOS. 50-327/86-40 AND 50-328/86 10 CFR PART 50 APPENDIX R This letter provides a correction to the subject inspection report and an update with regard to the status of required fire watches at SQN for 10 CFR 50 Appendix R.

During a review of the subject inspection report, an error was discovered.

The next to last sentence on page 11 of the subject inspection report states i

"... and that the power to the motor-operated valves identified in the interaction study No. 120 had been removed." Power to the motor-operated valves identified in interaction study No. 120 has not been removed. Plant procedures have been revised to remove power from these valves during a confirmed fire in cable locations described in interaction No. 120.

Item 2 of J. P. O'Reilly's August 10, 1984 Confirmation of Action (COA) letter to H. G. Parris required fire watches for safety-related areas where 10 CFR 50 Appendix R deficiencies may exist until all issues raised by the Appendix R review are resolved. All Appendix R deficiencies are now resolved with the exception of:

1.

Modifications to support deviations requested, and 2.

Source range nuclear instrumentation (Regulatory Guide 1.97 Revision 2).

These are the only areas still existing in which fire watches are required to satisfy item 2 of the August 10, 1984 COA letter.

If you have any questions, please get in touch with M. R. Harding at 615/870-6422.

To the best of my knowledge, I declare the statements contained herein are complete and true.

Very truly yours, TENNESSEE VALLEY AUTHORITY
